Prayer Diary

Reflecting God’s glory in an ungodly society

2 Corinthians Chapters 1-5

The church at Corinth was made up of people from all kinds of backgrounds and nationalities. It was a large city that had a reputation at the time of being a centre of all manner of immorality and ungodly practices. ‘To live like a Corinthian’ was a saying to describe someone with the worst kind of lifestyle. A seaport frequented by sailors and with a huge temple dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, with its 1,000 priestess prostitutes, it was a challenging place for Paul to establish a church but one that was very strategic because of its size and location for establishing a strong church,

Because Paul was working here mainly, not among Jews who would have had a knowledge and moral ethic of the Old Testament, but rather among gentiles who would have known nothing of Biblical knowledge and morality, Paul stayed for an unusually long time by his standards. It was hard work trying to teach them how to live in a way that reflected the ways of God and his glory in such a sinful environment. But God was good and despite their many failings the Holy Spirit was working among them in the use of the gifts of the Spirit.

Paul reminds them of the great responsibility followers of Jesus have: ‘For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and to those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task?’ 2 Corinthians 2:15-16. We have the ability and commission, to bring people to the place where they can accept and receive eternal life through accepting Christ as Saviour through our witness. Equally when they reject our witness of Jesus, that puts them on the pathway to eternal death. This is a great responsibility.

As Paul writes this letter he reveals many personal hardships he has encountered as a follower of Jesus and an apostle. We too will face difficulties. But we should all remember that ‘… we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is Spirit.’ 2 Corinthians 3:18. As we pray this month we are asking to be the effective ambassadors for Jesus he has called us to be, not copying the world’s ways but reflecting God’s ways in an ungodly society.

1st – 2 Corinthians 1:1-2 Saints in the church

  1. Lord as you have called us, in Christ to be saints, convict us of anything in our lives that comes short of your standards for us and cause us to change accordingly
  2. When we fail, convict our hearts Holy Spirit, so that when we confess our sin, you faithful and just and will forgive us and purify us from all unrighteousness
  3. Since you have made us to be saints through our faith in Christ, cause us to live out daily a life as the saints of God, as fruitful witnesses for Jesus
  4. Give us hearts that appreciate all you have done for us, Lord Jesus, in clothing us with the righteousness that we receive through the cross

  3. Lord deliver us from evil and lead us not into temptation, we pray
  4. As we remember your Word that says the sufferings of this present world are not worthy to be compared with the glory to be revealed, give us true sense of perspective and a renewed zeal
