Remember your Creator

Ecclesiastes Chapters 7-12

By the end of his life, Solomon had experienced everything the world has to offer. Yet what people think will make them happy and bring them a contented life, often misses the essential element. We are designed to be in relationship with the God who created us. And if we are not then nothing, no matter how wonderful it may seem, can bring us lasting contentment.

Ecclesiastes catalogues all the things Solomon tried to do to fill the void caused by his backslidden state, but it still left him feeling miserable. He was internationally famous for his intellectual prowess and wisdom; he wrote books on natural science and botany, over 1,000 songs and 3,000 proverbs. He was able to indulge in sensual pleasures with a harem of 1,000 wives and concubines; he made himself drunk with the very best of wines. But none of these things satisfied the emptiness within. He became a workaholic, overseeing all manner of prestigious building projects; he was in receipt of an annual income of gold that was measured in tonnes, but he ended up observing from experience, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.” Ecclesiastes 5:10.

Everything he tried to bring a meaning and a satisfaction to his life ended by making him more miserable. He experienced what the Holy Spirit later inspired John to write, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world.” 1 John 2:15

At the end of a life of opportunities missed by being distracted by his wives who turned him from a close relationship with his Lord, Solomon’s final conclusion is: “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.” Ecclesiastes 12:1. In other words, “Don’t waste your life like I have wasted mine. Make the most of every opportunity God gives, to do the right thing from the very outset of your life.”

Three thousand years later, though technology may have advanced, sinful human nature has not changed at all. Still people seek satisfaction in the hope of fame or wealth, in prestige occupations, in sensual pleasures, binge drinking and drugs – with exactly the same result. Life is empty unless it is filled with the presence of our Creator, found through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who alone can bring us into a meaningful and lasting relationship with our God and Heavenly Father. It is always time to remember our Creator and develop our intimate relationship with him.
